If you’re nearing the age of 65, it’s time to start thinking seriously about Medicare. Making a plan early could save you a lot of trouble later on.
As your initial enrollment period approaches it’s important to know if you will be enrolled automatically into Medicare, or if you need to enroll yourself. This usually depends on whether or not you are getting Social Security benefits or if you are still working. If you are not getting Social Security, you likely need to enroll in a Medicare plan. If you are still working at the age of 65 you may choose to delay enrolling in a Medicare plan until retirement.
If you avoid signing up for Medicare Part B as soon as you are eligible, it may result in a few or higher premiums later on.
There are certain times when you can sign up for Medicare or change your plan. Your Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before you turn 65, includes your birth month, and ends three months after you turn 65. If you enroll before your 65th birthday, your coverage will begin the next month. Each year you can review your plan during the Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 to December 7.
